Parish Landscaping Minimize

Parish Landscaping is a group of volunteers who care for the parish grounds. With seventeen acres of land in our care, keeping the gardens neat, the detention ponds clear, the prairie grasses maintained, and the lawn area cut is a three season project. There are usually three weekends set aside for volunteers to get the gardens ready for each season. With guidance from our landscaping contractor, there are also specific projects that are completed as needed. To volunteer, call the parish office.

During the summer of 2008, as part of our 30th Anniversary celebration, we started putting together native wildflower gardens in our landscape to replace the invasive weeds and scrub brush that had choked the grounds.  As stewards of the earth for our fellow creatures, we are creating the conditions to bring back their habitat - right on our own property.

We are proud to announce that the St. Mary of Vernon Church property has been officially designated by the National Wildlife Federation as a certified Wildlife Habitat. When the project started, our native plant gardens were still in their beginning stages, but the almost 300 wildflowers planted then were more than enough to qualify our property for certification, which was awarded to us on July 27, 2008. Our certificate is displayed on the Parish Life bulletin board. An official Wildlife Habitat sign is posted along the prairie garden path south of the parking lot.

As the months and years go by, we hope to say someday, “Remember when only weeds grew between the parking lot and the road? Now look at all the natural beauty. And it’s alive with the wonderful sights and sounds of birds and butterflies and little critters.” All of God’s flora and fauna have a place on this good earth. We hope to continue our part in restoring the habitat that is rightfully theirs.

In looking out our beautiful sanctuary window in the last few weeks, several people have been noticing some unusual activity, or should I say an unusual object towards the northwest. That rectangular object happens to be the remaining marble altar which we had used in our original worship center for so many years, which came to us from Our Lady of Loretto Convent in Chicago. The relics were removed and placed under our own new altar. This marble platform and base were set aside for future use on our grounds.

Now we have a wonderful way to make use of this marble altar as the base for a new statue that will grace our grounds and inspire reflection and prayer through our patroness. Several months back a parishioner of ours, who wishes to remain anonymous, requested our commissioning the design and creation of an outdoor statue of Mary, the mother of Jesus and our mother. The hope was that the design would be in keeping with the spirit of our original statue of St. Mary of Vernon within church, namely evoking the image of a simple, peasant woman of our prairie plains

We invited Gianfranco Tassara, who designed our statue of St. Joseph and our statue of Jesus and the Children, to create a statue of Mary for us with outstretched arms in a gesture of peace and welcome. Now our statue of Mary has arrived, formed from Gianfranco’s original sculpture in fiber glass to withstand the elements. So now we all can enjoy this beautiful statue of Mary, many being able to view the statue in the distance from within church.

This Mary, Woman of Peace, is readily accessible with her open arms embracing us and all people in her welcome. Young and old alike will be able to approach Mary on our walking trail or view her as well from our parish center windows and patio. We thank our own parishioners who have graciously provided us with this blessing to our faith community.
