Alpha Omega Youth Ministry Minimize

Alpha Omega Youth Ministry at St. Mary of Vernon reaches out to all high school teens and their friends, Catholic or non-Catholic, through social events, recreational outings, faith formation gatherings, prayer services, retreats, and service opportunities at St. Mary of Vernon and beyond. Alpha Omega helps teens become leaders in Youth Ministry and in the community; and it gives teens opportunities to share their time, talents and treasures here at St. Mary of Vernon.

Alpha Omega meets teens where they are and encourages them to continue growing emotionally, socially and spiritually. Youth Ministry strives to maintain an atmosphere where teens can feel free to share what they really think and feel without pressure to live up to an "image."

Work Hard, Play Hard, and Pray Hard.”  Our hard work come in the form of our work projects: a host of opainting jobs, both indoor and out; major clean up; maintenance; repair work; outdoor yard work; spending time with children at daycare centers for low-income families; and work at homeless shelters, food distribution centers and outreach centers.

We play hard with daily live music, dancing, games and skits. And we pray hard at opening and closing Masses, daily liturgies and through meaningful dramas and prayer experiences.

Additionally, Youth Ministry supports parents and guardians through parent-related programs. Adult leaders are an essential part of Youth Ministry. Acting as mentors and guides, the adult leaders, through their listening, sharing, caring and enjoyment of teens, model ways to live a spirit-filled life.

Teens are required to turn in an Annual Medical Form.

Some events will require a Permission Form. These forms are listed below in the documents box.

A very few events will have a fee.

All the events give you a chance to have a blast and to meet new teens! We hope to see you soon.

Check out the bulletin and the SMV Parish calendar for upcoming Alpha Omega events. For more information, contact the Youth Minister, Jim Welch jwelch@maryofvernon.org.

Summer Mission Trip 2011 Minimize

Welcome to the Alpha Omega Mission Trip 2011 Blog!

Dear Parish Friends,

It has been a long day of driving. The day started with a group meeting at the parish before many of you were awake. Everyone departed in pods and left for our destination.  Stops were made including a quick stop in Bloomington to pick up the last of the crew. After many long hours in the car we finally made it to the Hampton Inn in Columbia, MO. We swam and had much fun. Lots of pizza was eaten, stories were told, and birthdays were celebrated. Happy Birthday Katherine S. and Jack R! It was a long day and everyone is tired. We'll all be getting a good nights rest to get us started with Day 2!

Dear Parish Friends,

Despite the obvious expectations of serving others and getting closer to God we believe that the CHWC will be a place to meet new people and enjoy a fun work environment. We also look forward to music and programs each night. Although, we do have the 115 degree weather here in Kansas City. We prefer to see the glass as half full and are excited for the opportunity to have a nice experience. Although communal showers, rampant wildlife, mosquitos, and lack of sleep leave us less than delighted. We still feel safe and we trust our safety on the road with our drives.

Dear Parish Friends,

Today was our first work day at camp. We woke up extremely early and had a great breakfast followed by program. We left that morning in our groups to our worksites in the city. Everyone went separate ways. Some were at daycares, some tutoring, and others helping to fix up houses. We all had a long days work. By the time everyone returned we were all very tired. As St. Mary of Vernon's tradition today we had a great dress up day. Nerd Day. Many of the campers got into the spirit and enjoyed their fabulous looks. Oh yes, other churches were jealous. We finished off the night with program again. It was another prayerful time spent together here at Catholic Heart. Now we all rest in our rooms looking forward to another great day!

-on a side note today's filming was done by Sean. He has wonderful footage of interviews we are hoping to get in somewhere, but are unable to at the moment due to technical difficulties! However, some footage was used and thanks Sean for all the help!

Dear Parish Friends,

Today was another great day at CHWC. We were all set at our worksites and starting to get to know our fellow work team better. We were all looking forward to our second day now that we had time to adjust the day before. The second day is always  better because we actually know what to do. We woke up early in the morning and set off to our worksites once again. Some went painting, others went to help install things, some gardening, others tutoring, and some watching kids. Everyone was finally getting comfortable with where they were and they had more fun then the day before! When everyone got back the spirits were high and people were already hanging out with each other playing games of spoons. Then it was time for end of the day program...and well you'll just have to watch the video to see how that turned out. We all loved it and it was a blast! The day concluded with a great dance party and we were off to bed to rest for another days work!

Dear Parish Friends,

Day 5 was even better then Day 4! We all feel even more comfortable in our groups and worksites. All the bonding from the week has helped all of us. We've all met new friends and people along the way. Of course it was another early morning and then once again off to our worksites. We all love going to our worksites even though we hate the heat and work at times. All the residents are so kind and we all love the people we're helping. When we all got back we had an early night for program because we were in for a special treat that Jim will tell you all about as you scroll down. But, until then the rest of the night was another great one from all the campers and we're excited for the next!

Dear Parish Friends,

Four corners is a sacred, special, life giving, anointed, and for some campers, an emotional, moving experience. Campers are given an opportunity to receive individual prayer/attention and a "listening ear." It is an opportunity for campers to experience the sacrament of Reconciliation, prayer, and writing. It is a safe environment and atmosphere filled with trust, acceptance and the Holy Spirit in which campers can experience the love of Jesus Christ through one another and the sacraments.

Dear Parish Friends,

We finally made it to our last work day at camp! It was our last night there, last day at our worksites, and last nightly program. We were all happy and sad at the knowledge of our farewells later to come that day. We all left to our worksites for one final trip. We finished all of the jobs we had started and said good-bye to the residents we were helping. It was a sad departure from them because over the week we had grown so close together. However, we knew this day would come. Once back we still had one last night program to attend. It was packed with activities. Some of the residents attended and gave wonderful speeches of how much they enjoyed the help and company from the campers. We all sat with our teams for the final time we had together. It was very bitter-sweet as they all left and we split back up into our churches for the remaining program. Everything then was back to normal we had a great time, sang many songs, and saw the Carpenter Cammandos (becoming full-fledged carpenter cammandos in training!). We also had a few surprises such as gloves with lit-up fingertips and a flash-mob! It was a great way to end the last full day of camp and we left to return to our rooms that night with a heavy heart!

 Dear Parish Friends,

Today we packed up our bags and got ready to depart from the school. We all said our final good-byes to everyone and loaded up the cars. We were all very anxious to get to the Worlds of Fun/ Oceans of Fun parks! Kids and adults were both looking forward to a day of fun after all the days of work. As soon as we got there we received our tickets and departed in groups. We all rode as many rides as we could and for some as many times in a row as we could. It was a great day of fun and it was over way to soon. We then left the park and headed for the hotel we would be staying at. It was a long car ride, but we made it safely. We then had a fun night at the hotel before going to bed for our final night together!

Dear Parish Friends,

We were all set to depart for the final time of this trip. It was a sad time for everyone as we said some hard good-byes to new friends that were made. When asked how they felt Shawn said he was excited to get back home and plans on coming back. Mike was exhausted and also planning on coming back. Raelio was happy to get home and hopefully coming back. Jack was tired and grateful for the great opportunity. And Ryan was happy, he was more connected with God and friends and is considering staff for next year! Most of the kids felt the same way as this. Everyone happy, tired, ad sad. But there is still next year and always more opportunities such as this. We are blessed with so many privileges. So I'll be signing off for awhile now for this is my last post. I hope you all enjoyed the site and it was an honor to do :)

July 24 - Sat

Due to all the flooding, we got stuck in two hours of traffic!!! If you think that is bad just wait. . . more traffic and then the storm of death. They shut down the road to one lane, and while we were sitting there for an hour, we watched the huge thunder storm we were about to enter. On the bright side of things, we found out our car has a black light – perfect for DANCE PARTIES! But the major high point of the trip today was the magnificent double rainbow! Tonight we are staying at a hotel, and we are all getting really anxious for tomorrow. Tomorrow is the day we will see the school, meet our group/family for the week, and have the first evening program. We are all getting really excited for this wonderful adventure.

Hope you all had a great day

  July 25 - Sun

Going into the mission trip, we all had our own ideas of what this experience would be like but nothing was like what we imagined. When we first got to the school, everyone noticed that it was nice school. The rooms are very big, so the girls have one room and the guys have another. No one is sure how this will work out because the air conditioning is not as cool as we expected in the girls room. The program was really energizing and got everyone pumped to get to work. We met with the small groups and are very excited to get to work tomorrow.

July 26 - Mon

After the program that welcomed us yesterday afternoon, anticipation was built not only to find out who we would be working with for the rest of the week, but also what would be the tasks that would set our hands at work.

Once arrived at our worksites today, we were able to fully analyze the total extremeness of our projects. Some didn’t seem as daunting as they had the other day and actually seemed manageable for the week we had ahead – I mean getting rid of overgrown ivy off a side of a house can’t be that hard – right?

Today was a really fun day because we got to meet our resident for the first time. She was so nice and incredibly appreciative and was really enjoyable to work with. We had fun working with our group, even though it was the first day; we bonded through our work and talking with each other.

It was difficult to sleep amid the snoring serenade from the elder section of the boys room on July 26, 2010. The drastically shifting temperature of many of the rooms created an atmospheres that rendered many campers tired for much of the next day.

However, I was still able to wake up in time for a 6:00 AM shower followed by a delicious breakfast of fruits, Danish pastries , and hard boiled eggs. Breakfast started the day off right and led into a fun and invigorating morning program. After program we met up with our work groups and shipped out to our sites for the first time (the benefit to having Jim as your group leader is that he drives like a racecar driver). At the sites we began work and had a great time bonding with our new friends.

Upon returning to camp we filed paper work with the camp staff regarding tools and any problems we encountered during our first day. My group had to filed for a troubleshooter to help us fill the gaping hole in the stairway house at our site. Hopefully, we get Phil!

After a quick to trip to Dollar Tree with helpful adult chaperone Mr. Haight, I had soap and shampoo enough to shower (everyone in my room was very happy). After my shower I moseyed on down to the cafeteria for the first dinner shift. And now… FREE TIME!

July 27 - Tues

Even if I slept pretty much (only) six hours, my working day was fun.  I met new people from other countries, I also met a genius that knows how to build a time machine.  I had fun Jesus is the man.

~Vincent

During the past four years, I have never worked for a resident I didn't like.  They have always been so kind and the amount never fails to surprise me.  Currently, Mrs. Brown is no exception.  Every day she alsoways tries to help in some way, like bringing fans to the room we're working in that has not air conditioning.  She is friendly and open and we have talked with her about her life and family, of which she even has Great-Great Grand Children! Im all I've seen, It has been one of my most pleasent years at CHWC.

~Spencer Alexander

Today was our second day at our worksites. All of the teams have been bonding more and more with each other and our residents. Jess’s resident was so thankful that she made her team cookies. Everyone agreed that they were delicious!

No matter how much we scrubbed in the showers the proof of our hard work is still visible through much splatter of paint! Parents get excited for laundry!

And everyone’s favorite TACO TUESDAY! The whole camp gets so excited for the scrumptious “gourmet” tacos.

Our successful theme nights have set us apart from all the other churches! Last night we wore Chicago sports clothing. Most of the teens were wearing Blackhawks gear. It was crazy to find out that people here didn’t actually know who they were. They are really missing out! Tonight’s theme is neon! You can really spot us in the crowd!

Well it’s time for program! Thanks for the love and support! God Bless!

July 28 - Wed

We experienced a very busy day from working with our residence to program to four corners.  It was a very valuable experience that took up much time that left no time for a update.  Our deepest aplogizies.

July 29 - Thurs

Dear Parishioners,

Hello! I am Margaret Barrett and I have completed my final day at my worksite. Yes, not only have I willingly painted church doors and organized food in a food pantry, I was even allowed to use some minor power tools. In all honesty, I am really taking all I can from this mission trip. I ate a whole slice of pineapple pizza. . . with Canadian bacon. . . and it miraculously came from a good ol’ St. Louis dominos.

My group is amazing and we all work phenomenally together.  We have enough inside jokes to write fifteen blogs. . .or at least through 259 worksites. So far, none of us have even it way too far. This experience has taken me to a level of service beyond my expectations however.
