Father Joseph Curtis, Pastor

 

Ordained a priest in 1969 for the Archdiocese of Chicago, Father Joe served as associate pastor at St. Theola Parish in Chicago from 1969 to 1975 and at Santa Maria del Popolo Parish in Mundelein from 1975 to 1980. Father Joe served as pastor of Our Lady of Humility Parish in Zion, first as an associate (1980 -83) and then as pastor from 1984 through June of 1997.

 

After a six-month sabbatical, he was appointed associate pastor here at St. Mary of Vernon in February 1998. In July 1998 Father Joe became the second pastor of St. Mary of Vernon Parish when Father John Finnegan retired. Fr. Joe enjoys telling absolutely everyone what a joy it truly is to work with this dedicated and compassionate Catholic community of faith. In these past several years, he has worked alongside the people of this parish in updating our parish Five-Year Plan and creating a Master Plan for development of buildings and grounds to meet the ministry and liturgical needs of our growing community.

Father John P. Finnegan, Pastor Emeritus 

 

Ordained in 1954, Father John Finnegan has worn many hats during his priesthood: associate pastor, teacher of high school Latin, college professor, Dean of Niles College of Loyola University and acting Rector of Niles College.

 

As founding pastor of St. Mary of Vernon, Father John's most treasured pastoral years have been the past twenty years of ministry with the people of this parish whom he dearly loves.

 

He retired as pastor in July of 1998 but joyfully continues assisting at weekend liturgies or at other times when he is able.

Deacon John Glenn, Men's Club Minimize

John Glenn and his wife, Claudia, joined the parish in 1982 and John was ordained in 2003. They have both been active over the years in a variety of parish ministries and activities. John has continued to be involved with the Mens Club for many years. Along with several other wonderful parishioners, he is on the Adult Faith Formation Committee and helps lead the Married Couples Ministry. John also assists Deacon Phil Pagnotta with the St. Angela’s Outreach Program.

 

After Claudia lost her hearing in 2000, the two have taken several sign language classes and have become active in the deaf community and the Catholic Office for Deaf Ministries. John is the SMV contact person for people with special needs that limit their ability to enjoy our liturgies, activities or otherwise need assistance.

 

Claudia and John were married in 1976 and have two adult children. For John and Claudia, St. Mary of Vernon Church represents their “extended family.” 

    
Deacon James Wogan, Catholic Charities Minimize

Jim Wogan was ordained to the deaconate in 1996 and has been a member of the parish for thirteen years. He was a charter member of our Sharing Hands ministry and remains actively involved as the coordinator of our furniture redistribution program. He is also the Site Manager for our PADS homeless shelter,and runs Hoops Ministry in conjunction with Phil Pagnotta.

 

Jim and his wife Sue, a musician, choir member and member of the parish support staff, are the lead couple for SMV's Marriage Preparation program. They have three grown children and six grandchildren. Retired after 24 years of service as an active duty army officer and 8 years as a Junior ROTC teacher at Lakeview and Schurz High Schools in Chicago, Jim currently works for Catholic Charities (http://www.catholiccharities.net/) as coordinator of volunteers.

    
Deacon Mark Zwolski, RCIA and WERC Ministries Minimize

A member of St. Mary of Vernon since 1979, Mark was ordained a Permanent Deacon in 1989. Active in a variety of ministries over the years, Mark has been involved in the RCIA program at SMV for over 20 years, and is currently collaborating with a group of parishioners and the Human Concerns Commission to develop and manage an employment ministry (WERC - Wellspring Employment Resource Community) at St. Mary of Vernon. Mark has a particular passion for exploring connections between work and faith; he has facilitated presentations and group discussion on the topic of the Spirituality of work, and is currently working on completing a book on the subject.

 

Mark is the Managing Director of his own consulting business focused on Process and People Improvement, but considers himself among the millions of people in "work transition". He also remains busy as a volunteer outside the SMV community, serving as a Board Member, Fundraiser, or Organizer for a number of not-for-profit organizations.

 

The parents of three children, Mark and Carol consider themselves fortunate to be able to share their talents and blessings with the faith community of St. Mary of Vernon, a constant source of nourishment, challenge, and reminder of how near we are to God at all times.

Deacon Phil Pagnotta, Alpha Omega Youth Ministry Minimize

Ordained on May 25, 2003, Phil has worked with Alpha-Omega Youth Group for ten years and every one of the three youth ministers in SMV history. He visits teens interned at Hulse-Depke Center as they await trial. With his wife Nancy, he leads the current St Angela Outreach Program, along with all of you, to upgrade our sister parish, physically and spiritually. He is a self employed carpenter/contractor for thirty years. "I wouldn't be a deacon today if not for faith of the teens of SMV."
